Goryeo Celadon

Celadon

Celadon is a term for pottery denoting both wares glazed in the jade green celadon color, also known as greenware and a type of transparent glaze, often with small cracks, that was first used on greenware, but later used on other porcelain.

History of Goryeo Celadon

Celadon is started from Song dynasty in China. At that time, there are lot of trading between Song dynasty and goryeo dynasty, so people had a many chance to try each culture. Chinese greenwares were very popular imports to Korea and inspired local potters. Exceptional high-quality celadons were produced in Korea during the Goryeo dynasties.

Korean greenware, also known as "Goryeo celadon" is usually a pale green-blue in color. The glaze was developed and refined during the 10th and 11th centuries during the Goryeo period, from which it derives its name.

Goryeo celadon reached its zenith between the 12th and early 13th centuries, however, the Mongol invasions of Korea in the 13th century and persecution by the Joseon Dynasty government destroyed the craft.

San-gam Technique

The Goryeo celadon, which was based on the technology of the Song dynasty but which was developed by Goryeo dynasty technology, has grown remarkably since the end of the 11th century. The result of developing is inlaid celadon made by inlaid technique and it is not found in other countries.

In the picture, the inlay technique (Sang-gam Technique) is a method of representing the pattern, which is filled with soil such as black, red, and white on the embossed pattern, which causes the color of the pattern to change. It is very difficult to fill the pattern with soil of different colors, but the result is much more delicate and has various colors.

Crack Pattern

Crack pattern is one of features in Goryeo celadon. This crack doesn’t happen when the glazed and fired ceramic is taken out from the cooled kiln. It happens on glazed layer when it is taken out right away after firing when the kiln is still hot! Since it happens when cold air and hot air meet each other.

At this time, there is a sound of a glare. Sometimes regular and constant size crack can be beautiful, but it is very difficult to make it.

Patterns

Goryeo dynasty people presented various plants, flowers, nature. For example cloud, crane, orchid etc.
